Book Description:

“A Guide to Creating – It’s a book of soul wisdom for everyone who has a bit of the artist in them … It’s packed full of comfort, handy hints, truth, lovely scenery, and the glorious freedom of being.” ~ Joy Cowley

A Guide to Creating is a book to inspire and sustain the person who wishes to live creatively. It’s an allegory about a wisdom guide, Godfrey, and a writer who struggles with her craft, with motivation and most of all, with doubt.

In 56 short chapters, A Guide to Creating draws insights from nature to explore powerful, spiritual truths about writing and the creative life.

If you want to write, this book will help.

“Many people have rejected old religious structures that have no meaning for them, and have begun a search for authentic experience that will satisfy spiritual hunger,” writes author Joy Cowley. “Creativity in all its forms – social, artistic, domestic – tends to take the creator beyond the personal and into the great heart of creation where there is an experience of the interconnectedness of all things. But there is not much written about this process, at least, not much written in language we can all relate to. It takes a special kind of talent to take the mystical, and present it in a form that is as simple and delicious as bread and butter pudding.

In A Guide to Creating Jillian Sullivan has done just this.”

Sample blurb you can use to plug the book:

I’m excited to announce that my friend Jillian Sullivans’s book — A Guide to Creating: A Book of Soul Wisdom, a portable guide to inspire, impel and sustain the person who wishes to live creatively is now available on Kindle!

As international author Joy Cowley describes it; “A Guide to Creating – It’s a book of soul wisdom for everyone who has a bit of the artist in them … It’s packed full of comfort, handy hints, truth, lovely scenery, and the glorious freedom of being

“I would call A Guide to Creating a must for all writers, whatever their status. I’ve been writing professionally for nearly 50 years and was once Jillian’s mentor. With this book she had become my teacher.”

This is not a book you would read just once, in every chapter you will find a hidden meaning and a positive message. While geared toward writers, this book has been described as: “A naturalistic meditation on the creative life. Full of soul wisdom and the glory of the outdoors, A Guide to Creating draws insights from nature to explore powerful, spiritual truths about writing and the writing life.” A insightful statement from Summer Edwards, in Philadelphia.

It’s not only a guide for creating, for those readers who are not writers, artists or particularly creative types, you will find the easy bite-sized chapters wise and compelling and full of positive guidance. From teens to seniors, there is something for everyone within these pages.

Fun publishing facts — the ups and downs of my book process:

The power of seven – or of just keeping going

I wrote and sent away seven short stories before my first story was published (Scaredy Cat, in New Zealand School Journals). My first novel took me seven years to write. (I had four small children, no family nearby and no childcare in those days. It was a long process!) I went on to write seven novels before I had a novel published (Shreve’s Promise). All those sevens. It’s probably good I didn’t know when I started that first novel. My seventh published book is Fishing from the Boat Ramp – now in eBook form as A Guide to Creating.

After the fourth rejected novel I stopped writing for nearly a year. I lost all hope. And that became a good lesson. I lost my version of what success was, in terms of how the world responded. In the end I just longed to write again.

Late one night a sentence came to me, and I sat up in the cold and kept writing.  The story I wrote that night went on to be published. I’ve written ever since, and with a sense of gratefulness for the return of my ardour to write, and the determination to keep on, and keep on.

jillian-sullivan-straw-bale-house1Interesting Jillian Facts:

  1. I write from home in the Ida Valley, looking out to the mountains and the magnificent sky here in Central Otago.
  2. For the last four years I’ve travelled to America to teach writing for the Highlights Foundation in Pennsylvania. I first learnt of the Highlights Foundation in 1997 when I was awarded a scholarship to the Highlights conference in Chautauqua. From that time I have been enriched by the connection with Highlights Foundation and the work they do training children’s writers.
  3. My five children have grown and have families of their own now. Currently I have six (and a half) grandchildren. I love to read their stories.
  4. I have a Masters of Creative Writing and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English, both gained from studying extramurally over the years I brought up children.
  5. When I was 42 I went fulltime for a year to music school and studied contemporary music performance as a drummer. I played and toured for four years in the women’s originals band, Red Dress.
  6. In 2012/13 I built my strawbale house as builders labourer to my son-in-law builder, Sam Deavoll.
  7. I’ve published four young adult novels, two collections of stories, a book on mythology, a book on writing and, most recently, a collection of poetry. I’m currently working on a book about the strawbale house and an adult novel.

It makes me cry, it makes me smile, it takes me to a place where I feel I belong. I can’t really explain it but spiritually, it speaks to me. What I love so much is how insightful Godfrey is.”
